Scott Tibbs, Executive Director speaks at the River Region Veterans Coalition

Scott Tibbs, Executive Director, was honored to speak at the River Region Veterans Coalition to share UPMI’s goal to provide resources for exoffender veterans for hope and healing.

Scott and Natalie Tibbs of UPMI have long observed a critical gap in the judicial process: the failure to screen and identify veterans early. Consequently, Veterans suffering from military service-related PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), substance abuse and homelessness are frequently swept into the prison system for non-violent offenses rather than receiving appropriate clinical care.

Veterans Treatment Courts provide a crucial lifeline for justice-involved veterans, pairing rehabilitation with judicial accountability to address underlying behavioral health conditions. Scott and Natalie at UPMI advocate passionately to help Veterans access care and permanently step away from the criminal-legal system. The NEWSTART program through UPMI was designed to effectively address the needs of Veterans while building on their strengths. Scott and Natalie will share with our RRVC audience key areas of the NEWSTART program.

Through community partnerships, UPMI offers vital support for Veterans and offers education programs, job training, technical, and entrepreneurial skills aimed at enhancing the standard of living and fostering economic and vocational opportunities. Additionally, the UPMI program offers apprenticeships, various supportive services, and faith-based transformative training, providing Veterans and incarcerated individuals successful reentry into society as productive citizens.
