United Prison Ministries International is truly a volunteer-dependent ministry. God has blessed this ministry many volunteers who have provided ministry to prisoners, ex-prisoners, victims and their families since UPMI was founded in 1980. Today there are Christian volunteers just like you who volunteer to lead Bible studies and in-prison seminars, assist inmates, their families and mentor at-risk youth and ex-prisoners, and provide administrative support in UPMI in the United States and Internationally. It is our desire is to engage as many Christian volunteers who believe in what the "Bible Says" and participate in our special ministry to the "least of these" in response to Matthew 25:34–40. It is our desire to involve volunteers at all levels in the ministry and to provide opportunities to work interdenominationally, cross-racially, and cross-culturally.

We believe that crime is a moral problem—Christians call it "sin"—and the only way to really change society is by helping individuals make lasting life changes in their own lives by commiting their lives and values to Jesus Christ and His Word, the Bible. Therefore, it is vital that volunteers and employees live by these same beliefs, and UPMI has a Statement of Faith to which volunteers and employees must indicate their agreement.
