Adopt A Prison/Prisoner
In 1980, Richard and Carolyn Bland, founders of UPMI began supplying the religious books “Desire of Ages” and “Steps to Christ” to prison chaplains for inmates of a local prison in Alabama. Their impact was so significant that they decided to organize a small group of volunteers from local churches to reach out to prisons everywhere. Thirty-three years later, UPMI ministers to over three thousand prisons in all fifty states, and hundreds of prisons worldwide and has distributed over 70 million Bible Lessons, Bibles, and life changing books free of charge to prisoners and their families.
Tony Hall, UPMI Prison Ministry Director & Chaplain is working with wardens, chaplains, churches and organizations to bring awareness to the great need of the “Adopt A Prison/Prisoner” program. This program has a three-phase approach:
- Pre-release – To share the love of God and present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the incarcerated. This program works directly with the prisoner before they are released into society, providing them Christ-centered training. As we share the love of God, present the Gospel of Jesus Christ these men are prepared to enter into our re-entry program.
- Re-entry – UPMI facilitates support systems for newly released prisoners who have successfully completed the pre-release program within the institution. These ex-offenders are now ready to begin our transitional programs that include: mentoring, job training, housing, and continued Bible study and prayer groups. This involves:
- Outreach Services – UPMI facilitates a link between the newly released prisoner from incarceration to home, the church and their community for a successful re-entry into society. The UPMI Team works together with church groups and organizations by conducting prison ministry workshops and seminars focused on pre-release and re-entry programs to support ex-offenders find Hope in Jesus Christ and the loving support of a church family.
